Is there any financial support I can get when attending college?

Any student attending full or part time Further Education funded course, can apply to TyneMet/QA Support Funding scheme for help with costs related to attending college. An application form will be posted to all students during the summer break. You may also pick up an application from the Gateway at Coast Road campus or Queen Alexandra Sixth Form or Reception at TMC.

How do I apply for the TyneMet/QA Support Funding?

To apply you will need to complete an application form which can be picked up from the Gateway at Coast Road campus or Queen Alexandra Sixth Form, or Reception at TMC.

What is the TyneMet/QA Support Funding?

Financial support you may be entitled to whilst studying at college. This may be support with travel, lunch, kit costs and possible essential trips related to your course.

Who will receive support?

Any student attending full or part time Further Education funded courses can apply. It is intended for expenses not covered by other sources. You can apply even if you are receiving other funding or in receipt of a means tested benefit.

All applications are means tested, your gross household income, including benefits must not exceed £25,000.

How much will I receive?

Once your application has been assessed you will be notified in writing of your entitlement, how much you are entitled to and when you will receive payment.

How much will I get each week?

There are no weekly payments. Should your application be successful you will be notified in writing of what and when payments would be made. Some support may be in the form of monthly/termly award.

I need my kit before starting my course and can’t afford it – can you help?

We are unable to support with costs before you start your course and first reimbursement would not be until after Autumn half term. Talk to your Course Tutor and Pastoral Tutor about your concerns.

Will I get my kit paid for by the college?

You can apply to the TyneMet/QA Support Funding for help with costs related to attending college. An application form will be posted to all students during the summer break or you can collect an application from the Gateway at Coast Road campus or Queen Alexandra Sixth Form, or Reception at TMC. Your application will then be assessed, but there is no guarantee that you will qualify for re-imbursement of your costs. However should you be successful you may receive up to 50% of the cost.

My friend gets more than me – why?

All applications are assessed on the individual needs for their specific course. Should you feel your application was wrongly assessed please call at the Gateway at Coast Road campus or Queen Alexandra Sixth Form or Reception at TMC to make an appointment to discuss this matter further with a Student Finance Advisor.

I've heard you can get a bursary of £1,200 – will I get it?

To qualify for this bursary you need to either:

  • Be in Local Authority Care, a care leaver or live with foster parents,
  • Receive Income Support or Universal Credit in your own right
  • Receive Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credits (US) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or ESA or UC and Personal Independence Payments (PIP)

I am under 19yrs and need help with travel costs, what do I do?

If you live in North Tyneside – ring North Tyneside Council on 0191 643 8753 for a Travel application form which you need to complete and return to the council as quickly as possible.

If you live outside of North Tyneside or have been refused support from your LEA. Complete a TyneMet/QA Support Funding application form.

I am over 19yrs and need help with travel costs, what do I do?

Students attending a Further Education course may be entitled to help with travel costs. You have to meet certain criteria to be eligible.

Do you live more than 3 miles from College?

Are you over 19 years old as of 1st September of the year you start your course?

Complete a TyneMet/QA Support Funding form; you will be notified in writing of the outcome. All applications are means tested.

Do I get help with travel if refused by my Local Education Authority?

When will I be paid?

Payments will be paid the middle of each month. You will be notified in writing of the exact dates.

I was advised I would receive a payment and haven’t - why?

If your attendance has fallen below the required 90% attendance level, or if your academic achievement falls below an acceptable level, your payments may be stopped. You would need to discuss this with your pastoral tutor.

What happens if I leave college?

No further payments will be made. Should you have been awarded a travel pass, you will be required to return the pass.

Do I have to re-apply for support in the second year of my course or if I start a new course?

Yes – you will need to complete a new application form providing up to date evidence.

Can I get help with Child Care costs?

If you are under 20 years when enrolling on your course, you can apply for childcare support through Care to Learn, visit their web site for guidance www.gov.uk/care-to-learn

if you are over 20 years when enrolling on your course, you may apply for help with costs towards childcare. Childcare Application forms can be collected from the Gateway.

Can I apply at any time, during my course?

The funds we have are limited, so an early application is advisable.

I am over 24 and have applied for a 24+ Loan what other help is available?

There is limited 24+ bursary fund for help towards childcare costs and travel to apply please contact the Gateway for a 24+ bursary application form.
